چکیده

This thesis addresses two challenges in extracting patterns from social data generated by modern sensor systems and electronic mechanisms. First, that such data often combine spatial, temporal, and relational evidence, requiring models that properly utilize the regularities of each domain. Second, that data from open-ended systems often contain a mixture between entities and relationships that are known a priori, others that are explicitly detected, and still others that are latent but significant in interpreting the data. Identifying the final category requires unsupervised inference techniques that can detect certain structures without explicit examples. I present new algorithms designed to address both issues within three frameworks: relational clustering, probabilistic graphical models, and kernel-conditional density estimation. These algorithms are applied to several datasets, including geospatial traces of international shipping traffic and a dynamic network of publicly declared supply relations between US companies. The inference tasks considered include community detection, path prediction, and link prediction. In each case, I present theoretical and empirical results regarding accuracy and complexity, and compare efficacy to previous techniques. For Mary, Lea, George and Bruce, who always looked forward.

Unsupervised Models for Spatial, Temporal and Relational Systems

Social processes can be strongly influenced by their spatial and temporal environment, as well as relational structures specific to the process itself. While it has traditionally been expedient to study one or two of these dimensions at a time, it is increasingly feasible to collect data necessary to investigate how, and in what combinations and proportions spatial, temporal and relational (STR...

A Review of Spatial Factor Modeling Techniques in Recommending Point of Interest Using Location-based Social Network Information

The rapid growth of mobile phone technology and its combination with various technologies like GPS has added location context to social networks and has led to the formation of location-based social networks. In social networking sites, recommender systems are used to recommend points of interest (POIs) to users. Traditional recommender systems, such as film and book recommendations, have a lon...

Properties of Spatial Cox Process Models

Probabilistic properties of Cox processes of relevance for statistical modeling and inference are studied. Particularly, we study the most important classes of Cox processes, including log Gaussian Cox processes, shot noise Cox processes, and permanent Cox processes. We consider moment properties and point process operations such as thinning, displacements, and superpositioning. We also discuss...

Spatio-temporal Models and Languages: An Approach Based on Constraints

The introduction of spatio-temporal information in database systems presents us with an important data modelling challenge: the design of data models general and powerful enough to handle conventional thematic data, purely temporal or spatial concepts and spatio-temporal concepts. General purpose DBMS (e.g., relational) are not appropriate for storing and manipulating spatio-temporal data becau...
